"I started my career in my younger days with no formal education background. I am a self-made person. My experience and my relationships with others — that is my greatest strength."
— Kanthilal R. Katrela, Founder, Gakat TextilesWith no formal education and no family business to inherit, Kanthilal entered the textile trade in Bangalore in 1975 — joining D. R. Ranka & Sons, sole distributor of VIMAL, the flagship textile brand of the Reliance Group. He worked directly under Dhirubhai Ambani, Mukesh Ambani, Anil Ambani, and Devraji Ranka — a masterclass in Indian business at its most ambitious.
His hunger for knowledge never stopped. He went on to work at Sohanlal & Sons — BSL Suitings, one of Bangalore's established names in premium suiting fabrics. He then joined Vimaldeep, working under the personal mentorship of Shantilal Je Khabiya — a figure he holds in the highest regard to this day. These formative years built his product knowledge, his work ethic, and his understanding of what buyers truly value.
In 1980, he made the boldest decision of his life — arriving in Salem with just Rs. 3 in his pocket. He joined Jain Cloth Supplier under the guidance of K. C. Jain (Khatoor) and supported by his elder brother Subash Je Katrela. Salem's textile ecosystem was where his calling found its ground. He worked, observed, and built the relationships that would power everything that followed.
Borders never stopped him. He travelled extensively across Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, and various parts of India — meeting buyers, building relationships, and learning the nuances of trade in each market. He returned each time not just with orders, but with insights. This first-hand international experience gave him a competitive edge that no classroom could ever have taught.
Armed with experience and relationships, he launched his ventures one after another: Kamala Export Agency, then Sunita Export Agency, followed by Nidhi Exports, and finally Gandharv Exports. Each business was a chapter in the same story — a self-made man proving that character and connections are worth more than capital. Slowly and steadily, these agencies grew — weaving together a network that spanned India and beyond.
The agencies merged and evolved into GAKAT TEXTILES — a fully integrated yarn-dyed woven fabric manufacturer. 52 Sulzer in-house looms + 302 outsourced looms. 10,000 metres daily. ₹10 Crore annual turnover. 7 countries. The boy who arrived with Rs. 3, who learned from the Ambanis, who walked the markets of Sri Lanka and Nepal — stands today as one of Salem's most respected textile entrepreneurs.
"My experience and my relationships with others — that is my strength. I started with nothing and built something I am proud of. From the Ambanis of Bangalore to the markets of Salem — every step was a lesson, and every lesson made Gakat Textiles what it is today."

"I started with no education, no money — just drive and the will to learn. I worked under the Ambanis, I arrived in Salem with Rs. 3, and I built Gakat Textiles from the ground up. My experience and my relationships — that is my strength."
